Jiro Maruyama
(President & CEO of RF SYSTEM lab.)

Exercise your wisdom to the maximum. Wisdom and ideas are free.

The research achievement cannot be measured by the extent of financial investment. It can only be weighed by one's dream and passion.

He was born in Ueda City, Nagano, and became fascinated by the tripodic transistor when he was in the third grade. He built wireless device when he was in junior high school; then in high school, he was producing evacuated tubular monochrome television in his dormitory. He entrusted the local electric shop to sell his products. In his college years he gathered his friends and started the television repair service. He launched his business with the phone number to his dormitory and advertisement printed at his college. After his graduation, he worked for a large computer manufacturer and then became a freelance consultant based in Southeast Asia. In 1993, he started RF System Research Laboratory. In 1998, he established RF SYSTEM lab. In 2001, he successfully developed the world's first battery-free capsule endoscope. In 2003, he announced his plan to build the graduate school for the medical device development.

Winnig the Big Guys.

"The large corporation's laboratory with elite employees" - a slim chance of winning them. So people misconceived. However, these "elites" are not all prodigious in their ideas. There is a better chance of winning them than generally though. "Bravery" is the answer to this misconception.

Take public officials, for example. The "officials" do with their heads and not with their hearts. As they act not out of passion but of rationality, there is a good chance of winning them if you challenge them with the true passion and real feelings. They often like to play the "silent" game but do not misjudge that all of them are alike. There are some who answer with their passions if you face them with yours.

Reason to Seize the No.1 Share.

- 85% share of the global wireless intraoral camera market

It is because RF was the group of amateurs. The answer to all is that "pros" do not come to RF; rather, we do not hire "pros". We want the professionals who can think their job as their career, but we do not need anyone who only stares at own footsteps. They do nothing but drag us down. It is much wiser to spend the same amount of money on bestseller magazines than to pay their salaries.

This "group of amateurs" may seem disorganized but they work in such streamline and produce incredible power as if they are multiplied by their own head counts. They can change the direction to the completely opposite way within a second even if they are running at full speed. It does not need much time to make them understand but instead takes a lot of explanations with details. It is little tiring sometimes.

We do not need anyone who leans over on own academic or employment backgrounds. But we carefully review these sections on their resumes.

The large corporations are gathering in Nagano seeking for the technology developed by this "group of amateurs".

When inventing something new, we take our time to thoroughly observe the market and determine if it is truly necessary to people. If something began to fire up inside, then we must get started immediately.

The problem is to make a false start. Engineers often stop their development by saying; "this is technically impossible", or they build up a product with the plain reason that it was possible with their existing technology.

They do not think twice to develop the product, which may not even sell because they do not pour their passion into it. When we start designing, it is better not to open the existing product, which may be similar to our concept. That is because it makes the idea become very limited. Once the direction is set, open the existing product. Learn smarter approach from it.

If this is the challenge to the completely new market, take your time and think harder than "you have ever done before". First, scratch many drawings. Then do Others work for a couple of days and come back to it on the third day. Gather Others from different backgrounds and explain to them in full details.

Then, set your deadline to complete and announce it in front of them. This puts you in the ultimate situation where you would have to finish by the date, which you have set by and on yourself.

During the development, it is wise not to think about patents. It is better to spend the time to publish the article to receive as many evaluations as possible than filling up the patent applications. Today, too many silly patent applications are flooding everywhere.

Directly respond to complains.

That's why we can improve our products faster and can sell them at an affordable price by cutting out the circulation. We dare say, "Design first then the quality". This actually means to pass the initiative of product development from engineering to the sales. Generally, a company's founders concentrate on their own ground. That is a big mistake.

Do not let CEO have the money.

In general, CEO wants to be flashy with all the money that he has. We do not buy expensive measuring instruments even if we want them. This is because the more expensive they are, the fewer engineers who can fully utilize them. So I make them create their own measuring instruments. Their technological capabilities and skills rapidly increase by doing so.
